Earlier this week, the Louisville basketball program parted ways with head coach Chris Mack after an 11-9 start to the 2021-22 season. Now, with assistant coach Mike Pegues as interim head coach, the Cardinals are looking for their next program manager.

On Friday, longtime college basketball analyst Dick Vitale made his head coaching suggestion for the Louisville program.

He argues that the acquisition of current NBA assistant Kenny Payne would lead to a significant increase in positive recruiting efforts.

“Come on @LouisvilleMBB don’t waste time bring KENNY PAYNE to his seat they tell me at Churchill Downs he’s 10 steps ahead. But the big one? Can the admin close the deal – recruiting would increase dramatically. will happen!” Vital

Payne was a member of Louisville’s 1986 national championship-winning team under then-head coach Denny Crum. From 2010 to 2020, he was an assistant coach under John Calipari of Kentucky before making the jump to the NBA. The 55-year-old coach is currently working under Tom Thibodeau as an assistant for the New York Knicks.

If the Cardinals were to hire Payne, he would become the first black head coach in program history.

Earlier this week, Vitale suggested Louisville and Chris Mack’s split is good for both parties.

“Sometimes a divorce is good for both parties. Chris Mack can train his record proves it. However, when you’re at an elite hoop school like Louisville Men’s Basketball, your TEAM has to excel. Mediocrity won’t make it and MAPS have become MEDIOCRE!” he wrote.
