Eastern Kentucky names Garry McPeak interim football coach

Eastern Kentucky athletic director Matt Roan has named Garry McPeek as interim head football coach, effective immediately, as Walt Wells recovers from a heart attack on Sunday.

Wells is hospitalized in stable condition at UK Hospital Lexington. McPeek arrived at EKU in February 2021 and was promoted to chief of staff in the offseason after serving last season as director of football operations. Roan said McPeek is committed to Wells’ team philosophy and his appointment allows the team to move forward in the most efficient and least disruptive way possible.

The FCS-level Colonels open the season Friday night in Eastern Michigan.

“These are not the circumstances in which we hoped to operate,” Roan said in a statement. “(Coach McPeek) will do an outstanding job leading and supporting an amazing team of coordinators, assistant coaches and support staff. Our staff and I look forward to being with him through this process. for the benefit of the young men who make up our team.

McPeek is a 30-year-old veteran coach who previously worked at Valdosta High School in Georgia in 2020. He also started the athletic program at Frederick Douglass High School in Lexington and twice coached the Kentucky Horsemen Arena Football League team.
