History in Louisville: Racing Louisville 2, Angel City FC 3

Angel City FC were back tonight, on the road against Racing Louisville. Both teams were looking to get back to winning ways after difficult periods. For the ACFC, they have gone winless in their last three games, having lost two and drawing their last game against the Houston Dash. Louisville proved to be a tough team to play on the road, so the team definitely had their work cut out for them. Despite a scary moment in the second half, the team stuck together and even came away with a bit of history in their 2-3 road win.

Angel City were without another defender in this one, with Vanessa Gilles not making the trip to Louisville. The home team struck first, with a set piece. A free-kick just outside the box was set up beautifully and Gemma Bonner put in an almost unstoppable throw-in. Haračić gave his best, but could not find a stoppage of the week, which would have been necessary to save him.

IS THIS THE MUSIC OF CHRISTEN PRESS?! Yes, yes it was. After a quick tactical change in the game, head coach Freya Coombe reaped the rewards. Christen Press was able to get behind the defense and complete a great pass, and it was all slick at the time. With the ball and a step on the defender, she tackled the keeper and brought it home for the equaliser. The goal was the first for ACFC in three matches.

Both teams even entered at half-time, but Angel City wasted no time in the second half. Christen Press continued to put their stamp on this one, taking advantage of amazing free real estate that Racing was giving them for some reason. She tapped into her inner Dementor and took on the defender’s soul with one of the finest cuts you’ll ever see. Smooth, deadly and enough to give him space for a simple ball into the zone, where Savannah McCaskill managed to finish to take the lead.

The goal was only the second time – the first since the inaugural season opener – that ACFC had put two points past the opposing keeper. They are yet to play a three-goal game and were looking to make a bit of history en route to three points. First, they had to keep out a pesky Louisville side that wouldn’t give up. Running rookie, Savannah DeMelo was able to shoot a penalty kick giving Louisville a chance from the spot. A chance that they convert, again bringing the level of the teams.

Forgoing the penalty wasn’t the worst part of the streak, as Christen Press suffered a knee injury and had to be helped off the field and carried to the locker room. It was a moment that seemed to suck the life out of the team and the fans for a good chunk of the time.

The team did not give up and in the last moments of the match, Simone Charley found herself taking a penalty when she was the first on a lost ball and removed by the goalkeeper. Savannah McCaskill stepped in and put it on for her brace, and Angel City’s eventual victory on the road. The goal also marked the first time Angel City have scored three goals in a single game, making the victory even sweeter.

The win ends a three-game winless streak and gives the team some much-needed good vibes as the schedule becomes increasingly difficult to navigate. Fortunately, the team will have a week off before their next outing and they will need it. Next up will be a double-header with MLS teams LAFC and Seattle Sounders as they take the stage for NWSL After Dark against OL Reign. We all know everyone is waiting for updates on Christen Press, which we’ll get as soon as we know, but for now the team can enjoy the win and what little history they made. in the night.
