Hot Rods earn second straight Wild Affair win

Bowling Green, Kentucky — Late homers from Nate Soria and Luis Leon helped boost the Bowling Green Hot Rods (27-18, 68-42) by holding off Greenville Drive (15-29, 41-69) in a 12 -10 win in front of a sold-out crowd at Bowling Green Ballpark on Friday. The Hot Rods and Drive will continue their six-game series on Saturday with a first pitch at 6:35 p.m. CT.


Mason Auer started the game with a brace and scored on Alexander Ovalles’ RBI brace to give BG a 1-0 lead in the first. Soria started the second inning with a double and scored on a Tyler Frank single. Frank stole second base, advanced to third when Auer was hit by Greenville starter Wikelman Gonzalez and scored on wild pitch to extend BG’s lead to 3-0.

Greenville took the lead in the sixth after scoring five runs in the top half of the frame. BG responded with a two-run home run by Soria off Joey Stock to tie the game at five in the half. Maceo Campbell then ran the bases loaded and Ovalles tied the game with a two-out walk. Abiezel Ramirez walked to fend off the go-ahead in the very next at-bat and the Hot Rods took a 6-5 lead. Matthew Dyer added two more on a single to make it 9-5 and a wild pitch from Campbell tackled Ramirez to make it 10-5.

BG and Greenville continued to trade runs, with Leon responding to a solo homer from Greenville in the seventh with a solo homer. Johan Lopez added a point on defender selection to make it 12-6. Greenville added two more runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to cut BG’s lead to 12-10. The Drive charged with two outs but Nomar Rojas knocked out Nick Decker on three pitches to seal the win.

Logan Workman threw 5.0 shutout innings, allowing three hits, one walk and two strikeouts without a decision. Neraldo Catalina allowed five runs with one hit and three walks in 0.1 innings. Kyle Whitten (3-2) took the win in 1.2 innings of work, allowing one run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Graeme Stinson allowed four runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout in 1.1 innings. Rojas made his third save of the year in 0.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout.

Notes: Ovalles became the fourth Hot Rods hitter to drive in 50 runs this season…Drove in a run in six straight games…Soria extended his hitting streak to nine straight games…C is the longest active streak in the SAL… Auer started the game with an extra hit and scored for the third straight game… The five walks in the sixth inning were the most in a single image issued by BG staff this season… BG’s six marches drawn in the sixth were the most in a single run… The Soria Circuit was its first since April and first at home this season… Bowling Green and Greenville will continue their streak Saturday at Bowling Green Ballpark, with the first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. CT… LH Ben Brecht (2-1, 2.08) will start for the Hot Rods against Drive RH Tyler Uberstine (1-1, 2.45) … The game is available to watch on MiLB.tv…
