The family was in town for the “Run 4 Roses” women’s basketball tournament at the Kentucky Exposition Center. Dylan Evans, who leads Jones’ AAU team Wheat State Elite, said she was a one-of-a-kind talent, the closest thing he had to a girl.

“I don’t want anything like this freak accident to define her, because she has such a bright future and she’s got such incredible talent,” Evans said. “She’s ESPN’s Top 100 and she has big plans, and I hope she can continue to pursue them.”

Jones, 17, is a star basketball player at Nickerson High School in Kansas, according to 24/7 Sports. After receiving 15 Division I offers, Jones signed on Sunday to play college basketball at the University of Iowa. A senior incoming at Nickerson, Jones averaged 20.8 points, 15.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game during her junior season.

“I just hope for the best and pray for this kid,” Evans said. “Because he’s a wonderful person.”

Ruoff said the alleged driver was taken into custody after the incident. Court documents identify the driver as 33-year-old Michael Hurley. He was booked at Louisville Metro Corrections around 9:45 p.m.

Investigators said Hurley was trying to make a turn from East Market Street to North 2nd Street “but was unable to negotiate the turn.” It was then that he left the road and drove onto the sidewalk, “where he hit a family of four standing on the sidewalk, causing serious injuries to all four of them”.

Hurley told police responding to the scene that he had just taken hydrocodone and was “so tired he couldn’t go around”.

Hurley did not have a driver’s license with him, according to the arrest report. He is being held at Louisville Metro Corrections for assault and driving a motor vehicle under the influence.
