The Kentucky Derby Festival unveils its new features

The countdown is on and we are only 51 days away from the official launch of the Kentucky Derby Festival. And while we’re all waiting, it’s time to start talking about plans for Thunder Over Louisville, and it will be the first large-scale, in-person show since 2019. The air show and fireworks are back this year April 23. On Thursday, festival officials and Thunder producer Wayne Hettinger announced more about this year’s plans. The theme is “The Return of the Legend”. The air show will honor the 75th anniversary of the US Air Force. Apparently the show will feature “many planes we’ve never seen” and the “best planes this country has.” Here are a few that were mentioned: C-17, B-2 Bomber, F-16, A-10 and C-130J Super Hercules from the Kentucky National Guard. There will also be a special formation of warbirds to honor the USAF. Organizers also said there would be a drone show just before the fireworks. And another new element, this year Humana, one of the show’s sponsors, is offering free rides to Waterfront Park via TARC. “It’s time to put the last two years behind us…and have fun.” Last year’s show was changed and 2020’s was canceled due to COVID-19. WLKY is your exclusive home for Thunder Over Louisville this year, and you’ll be able to watch on-air and online on show day.
